Remembering Judge Harris

Dear Friends,
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Judge Leslie E. Harris has passed away. He was a beloved Trustee, a cherished friend, and a steadfast champion for young people. Judge Harris was also a devoted husband to his wife of 49 years, Beverly and a proud father. Our hearts are with Beverly, their children, and the entire Harris family during this difficult time.
Judge Harris first connected with us through our Detention Diversion Advocacy Program (DDAP), when it was introduced to his courtroom in Dorchester. He quickly became one of its most powerful advocates. He saw firsthand how our staff treated young people with respect, compassion, and high expectations — and he stood with us to ensure they had a second chance at brighter futures.
Over his long and remarkable career, Judge Harris wore many hats: youth worker, probation officer, teacher, public defender, juvenile prosecutor, and for over two decades, a distinguished Juvenile Court Judge. But regardless of title, he never lost sight of the humanity of the children and families before him.
He challenged systems, inspired change, and embodied justice rooted in love.
Judge Harris leaves behind a legacy of courage, wisdom, and relentless hope. He made an indelible mark on this organization, on the juvenile justice system, and on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be missed.
With Deep Gratitude,
Dr. Kathy Mills
President and CEO
P.S. To honor his extraordinary life and legacy, we are proud to announce the creation of the Honorable Judge Leslie E. Harris Memorial Fund for Juvenile Justice. This fund will support programs that keep young people connected to opportunity, family, and hope — the very values Judge Harris championed every day of his life.
